Showcase: Wall Hangings

This is a photo of my booth set up for an art show (click to enlarge).

The warrior totems (below) started out to be Art Deco wall hangings. Since I lay my glass out face down, I don't really get to see what I'm doing as I work on it. Basically, I have to try something, look at what comes out of the kiln, and then decide how I should adjust what I am doing to get what I'm trying for. When the first one came out of the kiln looking much more like a Kachina than a 1920s flapper, I decided the Art Deco stuff could wait.

The pieces are shown in chronological order. It's rather interesting to see the progression. The pieces are about 24" high by 10" wide and are all done in overlay style.

I really enjoy doing pieces where the design is broken up over several sections of glass. Each piece of the diptych is about 10" wide by 24" high. The triptych pieces are about 5" wide by 24" high. The largest piece of this type that I have done consisted of seven sections. These are done in both overlay and abstract styles.

The red triangle is 12" wide and 14" high. The pair of triangles are each about 8" wide by 17" high.

I make these bowls in 20" and 24" diameter sizes, both about 3" deep. They hang on the wall, but the shape is a bowl, so I call them bowls a lot.

I had made the 20" bowl for years. Then I got a bigger kiln. And hey, I'm a professional. I get paid for this. Even non-professionals know bigger is better. So, of course, I set out to make a bigger bowl.

Unfortunately, I didn't know that the sound in the background was the glass sniggering about what was to come.

Bowl number eight was really nice. Yes, indeedy, it was nice. And quite a relief, too, since the first seven didn't survive being slumped (bent). That extra four inches changed how fast I could head up the glass by a factor of 50%. I had to reduce the speed I heated the glass from 300 degrees F. per hour to 150 degrees per hour.

The large bowls are probably my favorite pieces to make.
